Free Crochet Hooded Infinity Scarf Pattern

I'm celebrating two things by offering this free pattern.

First, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of my biological maternal grandmother, Judy, who died of breast cancer in October of 1997, I made this scarf pink. My grandma Judy was a fun lady. I didn't know her very well, as she never lived close - she was either in Nebraska or Alaska - but she often stayed with us on her layovers through SeaTac Airport. She had a great sense of humor, and was always laughing. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and lost her hair due to chemotherapy, she hated people pitying her. She wanted people to continue to tease and joke around with her. I fondly remember stories of Judy's antics while on a bowling team - when she would get a strike, she would take off her wig and toss it in the air to celebrate, and when she missed, she would pulled it off and toss it on the ground. I can just imagine the shock the people around her must have felt, and it still makes me smile to think about. That was the kind of woman my grandma was, and this scarf pattern is dedicated to her...although, she would have probably hated that it's pink :)

Second, my little blog here has had over 10,000 views (it's actually closer to 10,500 now), which I find amazing. I never expected to get 1000, let alone 10x that amount. So this scarf pattern is also dedicated to those of you who have stopped by The Sequin Turtle and helped me reach that number.

This scarf is perfect for the weather here in Western Washington. As you may or may not know, it rains quite a bit here. For the most part, it is a weak, misty kind of rain that barely gets you wet. Because of this, Western Washingtonians do not carry umbrellas. In fact, the only times I've ever owned an umbrella were during my trip to Costa Rica, and a cute patterned one to match some equally cute rain boots that were bought for my maternity photo shoot because it ended up being a rainy, yucky day. You can see the pictures here if you're interested. Since we don't use umbrellas here, we are rather attached to hoods - hooded sweatshirts, hooded jackets, and my newest favorite - hooded scarves.

So here is it, my Crochet Hooded Infinity Scarf Pattern. Please excuse the poor picture quality. The scarf is also available for purchase in my etsy shop.

Materials:
3 skeins bulky weight yarn - I used Charisma in Think Pink from Michael's.
Q hook
yarn needle

Directions:
Ch 90, join with a sl st to the first ch to create a loop, being careful not to twist the chain, ch 1

Round 1 - In the same stitch as the sl st, 2dc, *skip 2 ch, 1sc and 2dc in the next ch. Repeat from * 28 more times, join with a sl st in the beginning ch, ch 1 (30 clusters)

Round 2 - In the same stitch as the sl st, 2dc, *skip 2 dc, 1sc and 2dc in the next sc. Repeat from * 28 more times, join with a sl st in the beginning ch, ch 1 (30 clusters)

Round 3-12 - Repeat round 2.

Round 13 - Sc in each stitch around (90 stitches), fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 14 - To create the hood, fold the scarf in half lengthwise, attach yarn to the top of the fold and sl st a 7" seam down the beginning chain side. After 7 inches, continue along one side only of the scarf and sc around, working 3 stitches for every cluster, and then sl st back up the hood seam to reinforce it. Fasten off and weave in ends.

To wear, put the hood on first with the scarf hanging down the front of your body, twist the scarf once and put it around your neck a second time. Adjust the scarf to your liking.

Now, if you ever come to Seattle, you can avoid looking like a tourist (the umbrella is a dead giveaway) and just wear your hooded scarf! Your head will stay dry, your neck will stay warm, and you'll look cute...much better than an umbrella, huh?

    1. I would just do a couple more rounds of the pattern to make it wider, and sew the seam as long as you need it to cover the back of your head. There is quite a bit of stretch in the stitch because of the large hook, so you might want to try it on as you go to figure out what would work best for you. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    3. Hi! I love the pattern but I'm confused as to how to make the hooded part. How many rows should it be approximately? I am completely lost at the point where the 7" seam is mentioned. Please help! Thank you :)

    4. Hi Tiffany! To make the hood, once you have created the infinity scarf, you will fold the scarf in half lengthwise and slip stitch a seam into the beginning chain row. After 7", you will then sc around the rest of the beginning chain (don't sew the two sides together anymore), and then back up the hood seam. So essentially, you're making an extra long infinity scarf, and then creating a hood in it by sewing the two sides of the scarf together for a few inches. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

  10. How long does it have to be ?..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When laid flat, the scarf measures about 29" lengthwise, so the beginning chain should measure about 58" - longer would work, but any shorter and you might not be able to double it up around your neck.

  12. I I've this pattern. I'm new to crochet and am a bit intimidated by the large number of stitches. Do you have any trucks you could share on how to keep up with them.

    1. First, welcome to the wonderful world of crochet! Honestly, the hardest part is getting the first row done (and getting used to the large hook), but after that, since you'll be working in non-continuous rounds (meaning you'll be joining with a slip stitch at the end of each round), you don't really have to keep track of the number of stitches in each row. You just need to keep track of the first stitch of the round, so you don't accidentally continue onto the next round without joining. Good luck and please let me know if there is anything I can help you with to make this pattern easier for you.

    2. Katie I was wondering how much you chained, I am also using an H hook but I am still using a bulky yarn. I chained 111 stitches but I am worried that when I make the hat, that I won't have enough to the wrap around my neck again. If you could help me I would appreciate it.

Now trying to make it but my needle and yarn are half the size you used (couldn't find a Q hook :()
I made my chain the size you described in an earlier comment, but now I'm not sure how much rounds I'll add to make it fit. Can you plz tell me the size off?
i have 72 clusters, think doubling the number off rows will work fine.

    Thanks for this lovely pattern!!

    1. You're welcome! You'll want your scarf to be about 9 inches wide, so just work as many rows as you need to get that measurement. You should also try putting it on as a hood and make sure once that once the hood seam is sewn it will fit your head, just in case your scarf doesn't have much stretch due to the smaller yarn and hook.

    1. I'm sorry, but there is no "hood only", the hood is made by sewing the scarf edges (the beginning chain side) together for 7". www.babylon.com translation: Je mi líto, ale tady není žádné "Hood pouze", Hood je provedené šicí šátek hrany (začátek řetězce straně) společně pro 7 ". :)

    1. If you check out the people who have done this project on Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hooded-crochet-infinity-scarf/people), some have used other weights of yarn with success, and others didn't seem to have much luck. I would say sure, go ahead and use whatever yarn and hook you want, but make sure your measurements work out so that the scarf is long enough to wrap around your neck twice while leaving a good 14-16" extra for the hood. Then make sure it is wide enough to create a hood that covers the sides of your head. Using the bulky yarn and big hook gives the scarf a lot of stretch, so it's hard to say what the measurements you would need for a thinner yarn and smaller hook would be.

      Delete
    2. I made this with RedHeart SuperSaver and just did 2 strands together :) Turned out perfect! Thank you very much!

  21. Hello. I was hoping you could clarify something for me about making the hood? I'm new to crochet, so sometimes I still get confused. You are folding the scarf in half, attaching the beginning chain to the another edge with a slip stitch. But where does the single crochet come in? I can't seem to figure that out. To make a ridge? Thank you in advance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So, you will fold the scarf in half lengthwise and sew a 7" seam along the beginning chain using slip stitches to create the hood. After those 7", you will work down one side only of the scarf in sc (this will essentially be the bottom edge of the scarf) and back up to the seam. Once you get back to the seam, you will slip stitch the hood seam again to reinforce it. Hope that helps!

  23. I'm almost done (and it looks and feels great!) I used a different bulky yarn- in red, and a P hook so i had to make some adjustments but reading about the measurements and the basic concept i was able to figure it out. ....... Now-- I'm ready to make the seam. Do i make the seam with right sides facing out as it is folded or make the seam with scarf inside out? ....BTW my mom is in love with the way the pattern worked up. Very pretty stitch--and great concept. I looked all around for a hood/cowl or hooded cowl. Settled on this one. Hoping to finish soon so i can give it to my sister, see how it looks on her and if she likes it....Live in NJ. Our issue here is trying to bundle up while still looking pretty. My sister is young and won't bundle up if it makes her look funny!! I hope to hear from you soon. Will try to work it out myself in the mean time
    Thanks

  25. Hello, just wondering if you've ever made this with multiple colours? If so, where did you change? If not, do you think it would look ok?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have never made it with multiple colors, but since the scarf is worked in rows rather than in rounds, it would be very simple to change colors at the end of a row and begin the next row in a new color. I think it would look fine in multiple colors.

  26. Thanks for sharing! It works up quickly and the stitch pattern gives it a nice texture. I used a semi-chunky yarn and an 8mm crochet hook. I just increased the starting ch to 115 and slip stitched the back of the hood before I finished. Now I can try it on to see how many repetitions I need of row 2 to make it big enough :-)

  27. Hi! I love the look of this cowl and currently making it. First time for me to make something to wear since i have only been doing amigurumi's so far. Which leads to the following question. After the ch.90 do you sl into the upper part of the "v" stitch. In the picture above it looks like the hook is going through the lower thread. Also when your first row is finished and you start the second row of 30 clusters. Do you stitch through both of the "v" or just one.. I hope it makes sence since it is difficult to explain without pictures :)

    Replies
    1. I usually end up working the first sl st and first round under the back loop and what would be called the third loop on the back of the chain, so just the front loop of the "v" is left unworked. I don't think it really matters which loop(s) you use for round one, since you'll be sc-ing around the edge anyways, but that is just what ends up happening most naturally for me. For the rest of the scarf, all of the stitches are done under both parts of the "v", so I work a regular sl st, sc, and dc throughout, not ones done in either the front loop only (FLO) or back loop only (BLO). Hope that helps!

  34. Hi. This is so pretty. This will be my first project and I have a few questions. Working in round confuses me. Can I make a long scarf then sew ends together? Also, do you need to sew the hood, or can you just put the scarf over your head, so it's a long oval from your head hanging down your front, then wrap the cowl part over your head for the cowl loops? Hope that made sense. If I did it that way, would I need to make the width bigger? Thank you so much! This will be perfect for my trip to Washington! Hate umbrellas. :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thank you! Working in the round is really quite easy after you join the beginning chain (just make sure you haven't twisted the chain before joining, another way is to crochet the beginning chain and first round before joining, and join on the second round - you are less likely to twist your scarf this way). Of course, you could work one long scarf and join the ends, but the stitch would look different in turned rows than in rounds where all of the right side of the stitches are on the same side. As for sewing the hood, you don't have to, but I don't know how well your cowl "hood" would stay on, or if it would cover the back of your head. If you decide to work a long scarf, you could just keep going until it is wide enough to work for what you want. Good luck on your first project! You can do it! :)

    1. The Q hook can take a little getting used to, but as long as your beginning chain is a multiple of 3, you should be able to use any hook you want.

  38. There's a touch of serendipity to finding a pattern especially designed for the climate I am heading towards. The climax of my travels towards the end of the year will be time in Seattle and Port Angeles over Thanksgiving. I figured it would be cool but I didn't know about the 'dampness", and I certainly had no idea about the umbrella taboo, so I'm grateful for the information. And for a pattern for the remedy! Thank you, Ruth (Australia)

  39. The first time I made this, I was iffy about the chain 90. I know I went over 100 in that initial chain. My mom loves it. Tonight I just finished another one and followed the instructions. Its definately for people with very small necks - like children. I'll be passing it along to a friend's daughter or something and trying again with a larger initial chain loop.

Just one question, because I am quite new at this crocheting hobby, I don't believe I have used right yarn in conjunction with the right size hook. And I may stitch a bit tight, So my question if you please, How long, how many inches should the 90 st chain should be?
Does that make since? I am on my seventh row but in looking at it, if i fold in half, stitch seven inches closed, emm..looking a little shy of length for the extra too wrap around and over again. 😕
I appreciate any advice you have. Thank you.

  48. My brother David has been diagnose with HERPES for a little more than a year. He showed signs of it for close to three years and no Doctor was able to figure out what was wrong, until my sister whom he had been living with kept trying to bring him to each doctor ---- finally found a doctor who recognised almost immediately that he had HERPES. He has been taking medication that was made available to him only through a medical grant funding from those who have donated to the continuing research for a possible cure. He has slowed down in the progression, but without side affects. My hopes and prayers are that, you can HERPESo contact the Doctor for possible cure if you have HERPES or any relative suffering for same disease here is their contact is as follow. healthmedlab@gmail.com OR info@healthmedlabclinic.com  their Website: www.healthmedlabclinic.com

Your ability to simplify complex ideas is truly impressive. Furthermore, in response to the question "Do US citizens need a visa for Turkey?" indeed, US citizens are obligated to acquire a visa. It is essential to secure one before departure, utilizing either the Turkish e-Visa system or the consulate, to adhere to Turkey's entry requirements and facilitate a seamless trip.
